Cape Henlopen was defeated by Sussex Tech on Friday, Nov. 13, 38-21.

Although it was a memorable game, the touchdowns aren’t the only reason parents and administrators are still talking about the Friday night match-up.

During Friday’s game, the Cape Henlopen student section displayed a sheet with words not suitable for a high school audience – let alone any audience.

Many spectators took to social media to express their concern. The photo above has been shared over 400 times, and has a slew of comments to go along with it. Another Facebook member mentioned complaints she filed with Cape Henlopen School District and the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA).

WBOC reached out to the Cape Henlopen School District and Superintendent Robert Fulton commented expressing his disappointment for the student’s actions:

“I am extremely disappointed in the actions that occurred at the football game last Friday night. This behavior does not in any way meet the standard of excellence associated with Cape. This lack of sportsmanship, and extremely poor judgment, is not indicative of our students but was a poor choice made by a few of our students.

We began our investigation of the incident on the night of the event and will continue to investigate until all students involved with the incident are identified. Any student found to be involved with this incident will receive consequences per our district’s code of conduct.

As the Superintendent, I am embarrassed by what has occurred, and I know that our staff and students feel the same way. I would like to extend a personal apology to the students, parents, and staff of Sussex Tech for what occurred at the athletic event.

Over the last several years, Cape students frequently convey a much different message than the one conveyed Friday night. Frequently I receive positive comments and feedback from other schools, districts, and parents about the respectful and supportive actions of our students and student/athletes. This is what I have become accustom to and what is expected.

Once again, this was an unfortunate incident that involved a few students and does not fairly reflect Cape students as a whole. But in this case, a few students making a poor choice such as the one that occurred last Friday, is a few too many.”

Others tweeted their disapproval.

WBOC also reached out to the DIAA Executive Director, Kevin Charles, who said the organization is aware of the incident and began working with the Cape Henlopen adminstration early Saturday morning.

“We don’t condone what happened. It is not consistent with our code of conduct for spectators,” Charles said. “When we get the results back from this investigation, we will figure out how to handle it.”
